Rubens At The Palace, London

May 11th, 2009

While crewing an event in London, we were fortunate enough to stay at the lavish Rubens At The Palace hotel, just opposite The Royal Mews at Buckingham Palace. This luxurious hotel is a few minutes from the Palace gates, and a refreshing fifteen-minute stroll from Westminster Abbey and the Houses of Parliament.

The room was comfortable, although the floor had an interesting, quirky slant to close to the outside wall that would have made carpet bowls difficult, if we had a mind to try. The walls are covered with padded fabric, and numerous prints of historical Westminster characters.

When we ate in, we dined in the popular Cavalry Bar, a warm and richly decorated retreat just off the lobby. The food was spectacular and mouthwatering, while the staff were friendly and helpful. The cavalry memorabilia on the walls and above the bar are enough to make a military historian salivate; it is worth a visit just for that.

We sampled breakfast in the sumptuous Old Masters’ Restaurant. Although they have a mouth-watering selection of meats and cheeses, fruits and cereals, which all comes buffet style, we went for the full English cooked breakfast. Apparently they are famous for their breakfasts, and we can see why.

Rates are competitive, and they offer a guaranteed best rate via their website. If you can find for the same room and booking conditions cheaper anywhere else on the day of booking, they will match it and discount it by a further 10%.

We would stay there again, particularly if visiting London for a shopping trip, or for a site-seeing trip.

Ilikai Hotel Honolulu

March 16th, 2009

We visited Honolulu on a stop over in transit to Maui at the end of February, and stayed at the Ilikai Hotel, Honolulu. The view from the window was great, being up on the 24th floor. For visuals, check out the Ilikai Hotel website.

Although oficially on the island of Oahu, the name Honolul applies to both the City and County, and the city and county is designated as the entire island. The Ilikai Hotel, Honolulu, is located at 1777 Ala Moana Boulavard, which is about a $15 taxi ride from the airport

The Ilikai is a deluxe oceanfront hotel situated on the Ala Wai Yacht Marina at the edge of Waikiki. The famous opening shot of Hawaii Five-O was filmed here, with Steve McGarrett standing on the penthouse balcony of this ocean resort on Waikiki Beach. Check out this great hotel when you visit Honolulu.
